The Story

The Basilica of the Blessed Sacrament in Meerssen, in the Dutch province of Limburg, preserves the memory of two Eucharistic events, one from 1222 and one from 1465, that made the town a place of pilgrimage for centuries. According to the traditional account, in 1222, during Mass in what was then a Benedictine provostry church, blood was seen to flow from the large Host after the consecration. The Host and the stained corporal were reserved for veneration, and pilgrims began to come in such numbers that the church was enlarged in the following century to receive them. A second event is dated to 1465, when soldiers set fire to the church during a time of war. Tradition holds that a farmer entered the burning building and carried the Blessed Sacrament out unharmed, an act remembered as the miracle of the fire. The rescued relic continued to be venerated, and the church that rose again became the heart of the town's devotion. In 1938 Pope Pius XI raised the church to the rank of minor basilica under the title of the Blessed Sacrament, a recognition of its long Eucharistic history. The relic is kept in the basilica, and each year the town marks the feast of Corpus Christi with processions and celebrations during its octave. Meerssen remains one of the principal witnesses of Eucharistic devotion in the Netherlands, inviting pilgrims to adore Christ present in the Sacrament that generations before them honored, defended and rescued.

Church Recognition

A longstanding recognized devotion: Pope Pius XI raised the Meerssen church to the rank of minor basilica of the Blessed Sacrament in 1938, and the relics of the reported miracles remain enshrined there for veneration.
