The Basilica of the Transfiguration crowns Mount Tabor, the rounded mountain that rises alone from the Jezreel Valley in Lower Galilee. Since at least the fourth century, Christian tradition has identified Tabor as the "high mountain apart" where Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James, and John — His face shining like the sun as Moses and Elijah appeared beside Him and the Father's voice declared, "This is my beloved Son" (Matthew 17:1–8; Mark 9:2–8; Luke 9:28–36). Byzantine and later Crusader churches stood on the summit, commemorating the event and the three "tents" Peter proposed to build. After centuries of ruin, the Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land raised the present basilica, designed by the architect Antonio Barluzzi and completed in 1924. Its two towers incorporate chapels of Moses and Elijah, and the golden mosaic of the Transfiguration above the sanctuary catches the morning light in a deliberate echo of the Gospel scene. A Greek Orthodox monastery also stands on the summit, continuing the mountain's long shared Christian heritage. While the Gospels do not name the mountain — some scholars have proposed Mount Hermon — the Tabor tradition is ancient and firmly rooted in the Church's memory and liturgy. The Feast of the Transfiguration on August 6 draws its largest crowds of pilgrims, and the summit, reached by a winding road, rewards visitors with sweeping views over Galilee. For Christians, Tabor is a mountain of hope: a glimpse of the glory of the risen Christ given to strengthen the disciples — and the Church — for the road to the Cross.
Church Recognition
The Basilica of the Transfiguration is a recognized Holy Land sanctuary of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, continuing a tradition of Christian worship on Mount Tabor attested since the Byzantine era; the Transfiguration is celebrated by the universal Church on August 6.
Catholic Teaching
The Transfiguration reveals Christ's divine glory and prefigures His Resurrection, giving the disciples a foretaste of the Kingdom (CCC 554–556); it is also the fourth Luminous Mystery of the Rosary, inviting the faithful to listen to the beloved Son.
