The Story

The Shrine of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne in St. Charles, Missouri, marks the burial place of the French missionary sister who brought the Society of the Sacred Heart, and free education for girls, to the American frontier. The shrine stands on the campus of the Academy of the Sacred Heart, the school she founded, overlooking the Missouri River valley where her mission began. Rose Philippine Duchesne was born in Grenoble, France, in 1769. Her early religious life was interrupted by the French Revolution, which closed the convents, and she spent those years caring for prisoners and the sick. She later joined the newly founded Society of the Sacred Heart under St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, and in 1818, at the age of forty-eight, she sailed for the Louisiana Territory to answer a long-held missionary call. In St. Charles she opened the first free school west of the Mississippi, and went on to establish schools and convents across Missouri and Louisiana despite poverty, illness, and hardship. At seventy-one she finally realized her dream of serving Native Americans, joining a mission among the Potawatomi in Kansas. Unable to master their language, she gave herself to constant prayer, and the Potawatomi called her Quahkahkanumad, translated as "the woman who prays always." She died in St. Charles in 1852. Her remains rest in the shrine built in her honor, where pilgrims come to pray, especially around her feast on November 18, and to remember a missionary whose apparent failures became, in God's providence, the seed of a lasting work of faith and education.
