The Romanesque basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro — 'St. Peter in the Golden Sky' — in Pavia, northern Italy, is the resting place of St. Augustine of Hippo, the great convert, bishop, and Doctor of the Church whose writings have shaped Christian thought for sixteen centuries. Augustine was born at Tagaste in Roman North Africa in 354. After a restless youth recounted in his Confessions, he was converted through the prayers of his mother St. Monica and the preaching of St. Ambrose, and was baptized in Milan in 387. As bishop of Hippo he became the towering theologian of grace, and he died in 430 while the Vandals besieged his city. According to the traditional account, his relics were carried to Cagliari in Sardinia by exiled African bishops, and in the eighth century the Lombard king Liutprand ransomed them and brought them to his capital at Pavia, enshrining them in San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro — a translation recorded by the Venerable Bede. The present basilica was consecrated in 1132. Its high altar is crowned by the Arca di Sant'Agostino, a magnificent fourteenth-century marble monument carved with scores of statues and reliefs of the saint's life, beneath which Augustine's relics rest. The church, mentioned by Dante in the Paradiso, also holds the tomb of the philosopher Boethius in its crypt. Served today by Augustinian friars, the basilica draws pilgrims and scholars alike, especially around the saint's feast on August 28, to pray at the tomb of the Doctor of Grace whose cry — 'our heart is restless until it rests in you' — still echoes through the Church.
Church Recognition
San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro is a basilica in the care of the Augustinian friars; St. Augustine, canonized by universal veneration and honored as a Doctor of the Church, rests beneath the fourteenth-century Arca di Sant'Agostino above its high altar.
Catholic Teaching
The basilica invites reflection on the Church's teaching on grace and conversion (CCC 1987–2005), which St. Augustine defended and lived, and on the veneration of the relics of the saints (CCC 1674), honored here since the Lombard kings brought his body to Pavia.
