The Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, Spain, rises on the banks of the Ebro River over one of the most ancient Marian traditions in Christianity. According to the traditional account, on January 2 of the year 40, the Apostle St. James the Greater, discouraged in his preaching in Roman Caesaraugusta, was consoled by an apparition of the Virgin Mary — who, tradition holds, was still living in the Holy Land — standing upon a pillar of jasper and encouraging him in his mission. Because of this, Catholics have long honored the event as the first Marian apparition, unique in that it is said to have occurred during Mary's earthly life. Tradition further holds that a chapel was built on the spot at Our Lady's request, making it, according to this account, the first church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The devotion is documented from the Middle Ages, and successive popes — including Callixtus III in 1456, Innocent XIII in the eighteenth century, and St. Pius X in 1905 — favored and confirmed the veneration of Our Lady of the Pillar. The revered image of the Virgin, standing on the ancient pillar, remains the spiritual heart of the vast Baroque basilica built from the seventeenth century onward. Today the shrine is one of Spain's foremost pilgrimage destinations. The feast of Our Lady of the Pillar on October 12 fills Zaragoza with pilgrims for the Fiestas del Pilar, including the great offering of flowers to the Virgin, and Our Lady of the Pillar is honored as a patroness of Spain and of the Hispanic peoples.
Church Recognition
Devotion to Our Lady of the Pillar is an ancient tradition long honored by the Church, favored by popes including Callixtus III (1456) and St. Pius X (1905); the image was canonically crowned in 1905 and the church holds the rank of cathedral-basilica.
Catholic Teaching
The tradition of the Pillar speaks of Mary's care for the Church's apostolic mission and her role in strengthening those who preach the Gospel; it rests on the Catholic teaching of Mary's maternal intercession (CCC 963–972).
