The Story

Our Lady of Pontmain, also honored as Our Lady of Hope, refers to an apparition reported in the small village of Pontmain in the Mayenne region of northwestern France on the evening of January 17, 1871. France was then in the final weeks of the Franco-Prussian War, and Prussian troops were approaching the nearby city of Laval. Fear and discouragement weighed heavily on the village, many of whose young men were away at the front. According to the traditional account, two brothers, Eugène and Joseph Barbedette, were helping their father in the family barn when Eugène stepped outside and saw a beautiful lady in the night sky above a neighboring house. She wore a dark blue robe covered with golden stars and a black veil under a golden crown. Other children, including Françoise Richer and Jeanne-Marie Lebossé, also reported seeing her, though the adults who gathered could not. As the villagers prayed the Rosary with their pastor, Father Michel Guérin, the children said the vision grew and changed. As the prayers continued, the children reported that a banner unrolled beneath the lady's feet on which golden letters gradually formed a message: "But pray, my children. God will hear you in a little while. My Son allows himself to be touched." The apparition, which lasted about three hours, ended after the lady held a red crucifix and smiled upon the children. Within days the Prussian advance toward Laval halted, an armistice was signed, and all the men of Pontmain returned safely from the war — events the villagers received as an answer to prayer. After a canonical inquiry, Bishop Casimir Wicart of Laval declared on February 2, 1872, that the faithful were justified in believing the apparition authentic. A large church was built at the site and raised to the rank of minor basilica in 1905. Today the Basilica of Our Lady of Pontmain draws pilgrims seeking hope in times of trial. The apparition's brief message — an assurance that God hears persevering prayer and that Christ allows himself to be moved by it — is commemorated each year on January 17.
