The Story

The Jasna Gora monastery at Czestochowa is the spiritual heart of Poland and home to the icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa, the Black Madonna — the most venerated image in the country and one of the most famous Marian icons in the world. The monastery was founded in 1382, when Pauline monks from Hungary were established on the 'Bright Hill' (Jasna Gora), and the icon was entrusted to their care around the same time. Tradition attributes the image to St. Luke the Evangelist, painted on a tabletop from the home of the Holy Family; art historians generally date the present painting to the medieval period, likely of Byzantine origin. The two scars on the Virgin's cheek, left by a raid in 1430, remain visible and are part of the image's story. In 1655, during the Swedish invasion known as the Deluge, a small garrison of monks and soldiers successfully defended Jasna Gora, an event that turned the tide of the war and bound the shrine forever to the Polish nation. The following year King John II Casimir solemnly proclaimed Mary Queen of the Polish Crown. In 1717 the icon was crowned with crowns approved by Pope Clement XI, an early canonical coronation of great solemnity. In the twentieth century Jasna Gora sustained Polish faith through partition, war, and communism; St. John Paul II made repeated pilgrimages there, entrusting his nation to the Virgin. Each August, walking pilgrimages converge on Czestochowa from across Poland, some covering hundreds of kilometers, culminating around the feast of Our Lady of Czestochowa on August 26. Pilgrims today pray in the Chapel of the Miraculous Image, where the icon is unveiled daily with fanfare, continuing more than six centuries of devotion under the care of the Pauline Fathers.

Church Recognition

The icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa was canonically crowned in 1717 with the approval of Pope Clement XI, and Mary is honored under this title as Queen and Protector of Poland, with her feast kept on August 26; the shrine church holds the rank of basilica and remains in the care of the Pauline order.

Catholic Teaching

Jasna Gora reflects the Church's teaching on the veneration of sacred images, which honors the person represented rather than the image itself (CCC 2129–2132), and on Mary's queenship and maternal intercession for the people of God (CCC 966, 969).
