The Story

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Las Lajas rises from the gorge of the Guáitara River near Ipiales in southern Colombia, close to the border with Ecuador. The neo-Gothic basilica, built against the canyon wall and reached by a stone bridge spanning the river, enshrines an image of Our Lady of the Rosary that appears on the rock itself, and is among the most striking Catholic shrines in the Americas. According to the traditional account, in 1754 an indigenous woman named María Mueses de Quiñones was traveling with her daughter Rosa, who could not speak, when a storm forced them to shelter among the rock slabs (lajas) of the canyon. The child cried out — 'Mamá, the mestiza is calling me!' — and pointed to the rock, where the figure of the Virgin was seen. Tradition adds that Rosa received her speech and hearing, and that other favors, including the reported restoration of the child after grave illness, confirmed the mother's account. The image on the stone shows Our Lady of the Rosary with the Christ Child, flanked by St. Dominic and St. Francis, and reports of examinations of the rock have long claimed that the colors are not applied paint but penetrate the stone — a claim the Church presents with appropriate reserve. Devotion grew quickly, and successive chapels were built at the site from the eighteenth century onward. The present basilica, the most ambitious of them, was constructed between 1916 and 1949, its gray-and-white gothic spires rising dramatically above the river. The image was honored with a canonical coronation in 1952, and in 1994 the church was raised to the rank of minor basilica. Las Lajas remains a major pilgrimage destination for the faithful of Colombia and Ecuador alike, with pilgrims descending the canyon path past plaques left in thanksgiving for graces received. Celebrations peak around the feast of Our Lady of Las Lajas in mid-September, and the shrine continues to be a place of prayer, reconciliation and Marian devotion for millions of visitors.

Church Recognition

A shrine long approved by the Church: the venerated image received a canonical coronation in 1952, and the sanctuary church was declared a minor basilica in 1994; it is the principal Marian shrine of the Diocese of Ipiales.

Catholic Teaching

Las Lajas speaks of Mary's maternal intercession and her role in leading hearts to Christ, honored here under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary (Catechism of the Catholic Church 971); the rosary itself, evoked by the image, remains a privileged path of prayer with Mary.
