Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa
Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa stands right in the middle of downtown San Luis Obispo, still serving as the town's Catholic parish. It is an easy, welcoming stop where the mission and the modern city share the same plaza.

Serra founded the fifth mission on September 1, 1772, in a valley the Spanish had already nicknamed La Cañada de los Osos, the Valley of the Bears, after hunting there during a famine the year before. He named it for St. Louis of Toulouse, a young Franciscan bishop. Chumash and Salinan people lived in the surrounding villages and built the mission.
Early buildings were roofed with thatch, which burned easily when fire arrows were shot onto them during periods of conflict. Tradition credits the friars here with turning to fired clay roof tiles in response, a method that spread through the chain and became one of the defining marks of mission architecture. The church has an unusual L-shaped plan, with the belfry and vestibule joined to the nave.
The mission was covered over with clapboard and a New England-style steeple in the 1800s, then stripped back to its original adobe lines in a restoration finished in 1934. Today it is an active parish of the Diocese of Monterey. Visitors find the church, a good museum of Chumash and mission material, and a plaza and creek walk just outside the doors.
Church Recognition
Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was founded on September 1, 1772 by St. Junípero Serra. It is the fifth of the twenty-one missions of Alta California, and today it is active parish church and museum.
The mission was built by Native Californians, and the Church has publicly acknowledged the coercion and harm that mission life involved. That history is told in full on the California Mission Trail page, and it belongs to this place as much as its founding date does.

This mission is one of the twenty-one on the California Mission Trail, the fifth to be founded. The trail page carries the history of the chain as a whole, including the Church's own reckoning with it.
