The Story

The Sanctuary of Montserrat is a Benedictine abbey set high on the strange, serrated peaks of the Montserrat massif, about thirty miles northwest of Barcelona. It is the home of La Moreneta, the beloved Black Madonna of Catalonia — a Romanesque carving of the Virgin and Child that has drawn pilgrims up the mountain for centuries. According to the traditional account, shepherds discovered an image of the Virgin in a mountain cave in the year 880, guided by mysterious lights and song; the Holy Cave (Santa Cova) remains a place of prayer today. Hermits lived on the mountain from early times, and in 1025 Abbot Oliba founded the monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, which grew into one of the great pilgrimage centers of Spain. Scholars date the present statue to the twelfth century. Montserrat holds a notable place in the history of conversion: in 1522 St. Ignatius of Loyola kept an all-night vigil before Our Lady of Montserrat and laid down his sword at her altar, a turning point on his path from soldier to founder of the Jesuits. The monastery was devastated during the Napoleonic wars and rebuilt, and it endured as a spiritual and cultural refuge for the Catalan people through the trials of the twentieth century. Today a community of Benedictine monks continues the round of prayer, and the Escolania, one of Europe's oldest boys' choirs, sings daily before the Virgin. Pilgrims ascend by mountain road, cable car, or rack railway to venerate La Moreneta, whose feast is celebrated on April 27.

Church Recognition

The image of Our Lady of Montserrat was canonically crowned in 1881, and Pope Leo XIII declared her patroness of Catalonia; the abbey church holds the rank of basilica and the shrine remains in the care of the Benedictine monks of Montserrat.

Catholic Teaching

Montserrat expresses the Church's teaching on Mary's motherly intercession and her role in leading hearts to Christ (CCC 963–972), joined to the Benedictine witness that prayer and work ordered to God stand at the heart of Christian life.
